Tuna and Wine in Conil: La Chanca and Sancha Pérez

We are visiting Conil, known for its wide beaches and natural coves with fine sand and crystal-clear waters, to learn about its history and origins. We will visit La Chanca, the old tuna fishing site, a key piece in the town's development and recently restored. We will finish at the Sancha Pérez organic Winery, a commitment to the recovery and transformation of the olive and vine, two strategic crops for the town between the 17th and 19th centuries.

The history of Conil de la Frontera cannot be explained without fishing. The town arose as a tuna fishing site in the Middle Ages, after King Fernando IV granted the tuna fishing monopoly to Alonso Pérez de Guzmán. This fishery enabled its development and urban formation during the 16th century, when La Chanca was built to house the cutting and salting of tuna. The recent rehabilitation of the building, which suffered damage from the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, was completed in March 2014 and has allowed some of these spaces to be recovered and given new uses.

Activity Description: We will begin our visit to Conil with a tour of the archaeological site of La Chanca, guided by the archaeologist who directed the excavation work. Afterwards, we will head to the Sancha Pérez Estate, a place where organic farming is practiced and where a commitment has been made to the agri-food transformation of the olive and vine, crops that played an important role in Conil’s economy in the 17th to 19th centuries. It is a commitment to high-quality red wines, mainly from the Petit Verdot variety and the recovered Tintilla de Rota, a native variety from the province of Cádiz. Sancha Pérez also produces organic extra virgin olive oil from the Arbequina variety, with a smooth and fruity flavor.

After a visit to the winery led by Ramón Sánchez, its owner, we will enjoy a tasting of their wines and lunch at the Winery featuring authentic tuna with onions.
